I was picking weeds today and my mind started to wander and think of what life would be like without them. What was the original creation like before the fall? before the weeds? God placed Adam in the garden "to work it and take care of it" (Genesis 2:15) -- He was created to work. After the "fall" God said to Adam, "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all of the days of your life." (Genesis 3:17b)
So now we live in a state where work is a pain. We have to work to make our living and in many cases the joy is removed from it. Even if you like your job, work has a negative reputation. We plan our year around vacations and plan for retirement when we can finally "live". I think many of us expect heaven to be our home and place of rest. That is true -- partly. We will finally feel complete, at peace and at home, but in heaven we will work too, "No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him." (Revelations 22:3). Our work will no longer be under the curse as we experience work now, we will finally be fulfilled in what we do.
This lesson challenged me to continue to read the Bible to check my expectations. I have said many times that most of the disappointments in your life will come from your un-met expectations. I don't want my expectations of God and his future for me to be thwarted by the environment I live in. I need to continually go back to Him, His word and His church for direction and focus.
